Going down.

Taking it all in.

6/26/2005, Sunday - A blazing sun woke us up early at 7 A.M. It didn't matter because Lila soon made us m&m pancakes. We then packed up and started on the 4 or so hour drive back to L.A. We stopped for a little scrambling on volcanic rocks in a place shortly south of Cartago known as Fossil Falls. It was a very interesting place - and a good for rock climbing I hear. The rock was hard and smooth - almost granite like - yet also filled with pores - testiment to its ancient fiery days. After a short scramble down, we reached a ledge on which grew soft green grass. The ledge overlooked a small gorge. Despite the view, it also felt like a cavern - as we were surrounded by high canyon walls on three sides. The place had a hollow echoey feel - like the inside of a cathedral. The air felt suddenly cool; a steady breeze lightly caressed us. Above the ledge flew a school of birds (sparrows?). The experience was both eerie and somehow ethereal and refreshing.... Other than that, the drive back to UCLA was uneventful.

I'm glad to have taken this trip - to be out in nature again. I'm also glad to meet Devin and Jennifer and to see Lila again. I always feel grateful to have shared with people coming from various backgrounds a trip like this....
